Privacy in the Digital Age

In today’s world, we are surrounded by digital devices through the use of which data and surveillance have become important concerns in our lives. These information collectors and disseminators have recently led to concerning conversations about privacy. My thesis aims to open our eyes to all the digital eyes looking at us.

  • My thesis was a combination of illustration and experiential design. I wanted to generate an experience of how a person would feel when they find out that they are constantly being watched. My space was laid out in such a way where the viewer would first experience the illustrations and then look at the live stream. Where I hoped that they would realize that they are being watched in the space. The use of such an illustration style was deliberate. In my thesis I questioned how these devices that we are surrounded by perceive us. I debated that different living beings have a different way that they visualize the world so I raised the question of how these devices would visualize us. This question resulted in the aesthetic style that I developed which in turn resulted in the coding of the live stream in the space.
  • However, a more effective way of creating this sense of being watched would be to make a more immersive experience. This could’ve been done by placing the viewer in the static images. This way the viewer would have been more immersed in the space.
